When should you consider a specialist reassessment?
Sometimes the initial assessment after an accident does not fully explain persistent symptoms. A specialist orthopaedic reassessment can help determine what may need to happen next. It may be appropriate to request a new assessment when:
- Pain persists despite treatment
- Symptoms have not improved as expected
- There is a persistent loss of movement
- There is weakness
- There are neurological symptoms
- Shoulder pain or weakness persists after trauma
- Neck or back pain continues
- Knee pain persists after the accident
- Symptoms have changed or worsened
- The initial assessment did not fully explain ongoing symptoms
- You would like a specialist orthopaedic opinion
These symptoms do not necessarily mean a serious injury. Their significance depends on the clinical history, examination and evolution of the problem.

The clinical assessment is structured to review your current condition and the information available from your previous care:

Additional imaging or investigations depend on the clinical picture. They are considered on the basis of symptoms, physical examination, evolution and clinical judgement — not automatically in every case.
Common post-accident problems we assess
These conditions do not always require an MRI scan. The need for further imaging is based on the clinical assessment and the specialist's judgement.
What if physiotherapy has not resolved the problem?
Physiotherapy can be an important part of recovery after an accident. However, persistent symptoms may sometimes require reassessment to determine whether the diagnosis, investigations or treatment plan should be reviewed.
Depending on the clinical findings, further imaging, a different treatment approach or referral to another specialist may be appropriate. These decisions are made on an individual clinical basis.
When another specialist may be appropriate
An orthopaedic assessment can determine that a patient might benefit from evaluation by another unit or specialist, depending on the findings. Depending on the case, this may include:
- Pain Medicine
- Neurology
- Rehabilitation
- Physiotherapy
- Orthopaedic subspecialist
- Other appropriate specialist care
A referral is not automatic; it is considered only when clinically appropriate based on the assessment.
